A Great Show Dragged Down by a Disappointing Final Season and Ending
When I first started watching The Boys, I had no expectations. I was just intrigued to watch another show from Eric Kripke, the creator of one of my favorite shows, Supernatural. The Boys takes place in a world where superheroes are treated as celebrities and political figures, but behind their public image many of them are corrupt, selfish, and downright evil. At the center is Homelander, the terrifying leader of The Seven, and the vigilante group determined to bring him down. I immediately loved the show. This was such an interesting and original concept where you can see similarities to the leaders of the real world today. Homelander is a complete psychopath and you never really know what he will do next. He feels untouchable. He wants to take control of Vought and the world, committing heinous acts in secret to get there, while simultaneously craving love and fame. He is one of the most interesting villains I've ever seen. Anthony Starr's acting was without a doubt the show's biggest strength. He was always the highlight of every episode. His facial expressions and intimidating presence often said more than words ever could. Even in the weaker later seasons, he remained consistently excellent. His portrayal of Homelander is legendary. The characters overall are great, and every actor fits their respective role perfectly. Another thing I love about the show is how fearlessly it pushes boundaries. It combines graphic violence with absurd, inventive scenarios that feel unlike anything else on television, and somehow manages to make the brutality genuinely funny. The series has a very unkempt, brutal, and daring use of language which also adds a lot to the comedic aspect. It's also fantastic at building tension and throwing unexpected situations at you that you never saw coming. The action is brutal and effective, and extremely entertaining. Seasons 1-3 are the show's peak, with each season improving on the last and culminating in an outstanding third season. Season 4 made me a bit disappointed for the first time. It just wasn't that entertaining, lacked tension and felt like the story was treading water. Season 5, the final season, made me even more disappointed. They have built up so much that this season will be nothing like we have ever seen before. Homelander will be crazier and more powerful than ever. The final season never carried the weight of a true ending. It lacked the sense that everything was building toward an epic conclusion. Where were the high stakes, the tension, and the action? All the talk about scorched earth never amounted to anything. All the posters I saw hyping up the final season were lies. Homelander never went off the rails. I wanted something darker, something more psychopathic and evil, more death and destruction! Most of the season was spent on exposition, with characters simply talking about things to fill out the episodes. I almost got bored many times. When Soldier Boy hands over the V1 to Homelander, the Boys just stand idle, watching, instead of trying to stop it. I screamed at the TV "Do something! Butcher, shoot your tentacles and grab it!" Instead they run away as Homelander injects himself with the V1. Now he is immortal, and now he truly is unstoppable. Sister Sage, the smartest woman alive, was sure that Soldier Boy would never give Homelander (his son) the V1. She never took into account that they actually are father and son, and that it might happen this way? Really? The show is known for the gory and brutal deaths, so when Frenchie dies, one of the main characters, he is killed by Homelander OFF SCREEN. We never saw what Homelander did to him, which really undermined the emotional impact of his death. He just crawled out and left a trail of blood, and died in Kimiko's arms. What happened with the build up from Gen V with Marie Moreau and her gang? They were supposed to help out in the final season of The Boys right? The help they provided was to escort some people away? They did nothing, and since Gen V is now cancelled, this is their ending. So, now when Homelander is injected with the V1 he should be unstoppable right? Apparently the Boys came up with an idea that they can give Kimiko the same power that Soldier Boy has, to remove other supes powers with the chest beam, in like a day with the help of some notes and experimentation? I'm supposed to believe this just because they had Sage on their side? The smartest woman alive? That did not count on love being a factor earlier? This was a really boring and rushed way to take down Homelander. The V1 didn't even seem to change anything? Homelander was just the same way as always, except he built a theme park moments after the injection. The V1 storyline was a complete waste of time. And then in the final fight in the oval office, they take down Homelander with such ease that it feels ridiculous. Why can't Homelander fly away from Butcher's tentacles? He just flew to space and left a billionaire there in like a second. He also escaped and crashed through the roof in the fight in Herogasm in season 3. Why could he not do that now? He has the speed to catch A-Train, so leaving the oval office should not be an issue with his strength and speed. Kimiko first needs rage to charge, and then in an instant she is not mad at Homelander anymore, and it's all about the love for Frenchie? Homelander's death was so satisfying though. There were so many characters that got such a bad resolution. The Deep's death was particularly silly. A character with his abilities should have had no problem escaping that situation. You're telling me he can't escape that water, and gets killed by a super strong octopus? Starlight fighting crime while pregnant and Sage lives? One second Butcher agrees to save Starlight, Kimiko and other supes, but as soon as he gets rejected by Ryan and his dog dies he wants to kill everyone? The biggest joke was how Soldier Boy went out. A neck grab by Homelander and he falls asleep in five seconds, so Homelander can put him in the can again? This was just beyond stupid. Come on. Overall, The Boys is a great show dragged down by a disappointing final season and ending. Of course both season 4 and season 5 had their moments of gore and fun. I really enjoyed seeing so many actors from Supernatural make an appearance, especially the scenes with Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, and Misha Collins now in the final season. It's just such a shame that they wasted the potential this show had. By the final season, Homelander no longer felt like the unpredictable force of nature he once was. The writing repeatedly weakened him whenever the plot required it, undermining much of the fear and tension that made him such a compelling villain. It's for sure not the worst ending I've experienced, but it's pretty bad and disappointing. After season 3 the show was a solid 10/10 for me. Now it's a vague 8/10.

Show less ↑The last 2 seasons
It's alright. It's a bit on the nose with the parody and the last 2 seasons just felt like things were happening. Not enough buildup and the scenes feel contrived. Very reminiscent of the later seasons of game of thrones. I do like O Father. His delivery was spot on. Overall a decent watch if youre into the superhero genre. I would also recommend Invincible.
Incredible early seasons, weaker later seasons (but still a great show)
I've been a fan of this show since Season 3 came out in 2022. At the time I would've given this show a perfect 10 because of the great characters and the consistently entertaining writing. However, the newer seasons from 2024 and onward have felt lackluster compared to the glory of the earlier seasons. You can tell these newer seasons were less about the story, and more about making money and promoting spinoffs. Despite this, Seasons 1-3 are incredible. The villain, Homelander, is an incredibly terrifying yet entertaining antagonist, and the way the plot follows "regular guys versus superheroes" is more exciting to watch than you might think. The tension between the boys and the Seven (the superhero team) gets sharper and sharper with each episode, and watching every different way Butcher and his crew try to take down Homelander is fun to watch. Just because the later seasons are less fruitful doesn't mean you should stop after season 3. There are still excellent episodes, like "Wisdom of the Ages", "Season Four Finale" and "Fifteen Inches of Sheer Dynamite", and other great characters are introduced like Firecracker and Oh Father that keep the show entertaining. Overall, I think The Boys is a great show with a unique and original story that is entertaining and worthwhile to watch.

Show less ↑Was hoping for a better last season
There's nothing more that I can really say about The Boys that hasn't already been said. It's just a flat out awesome show. It's easily become one of my favorite new shows over the years. It just has such an original take on the Superhero genre that is both exciting and hilarious. I really can't recommend this show enough! Just a warning though...once you start watching it it's hard to stop so make sure you give yourself enough time because you'll want to binge it as quickly as possible. Having said that the last season isn't quite as good.

The Boys is one of the best Superhero shows I've ever seen. While Season 1 was the best season of the series, Season 3 and 4 were also both very good and absolutely worth watching. Season 3 was fantastic, Jensen Ackles was the perfect actor to add to this already incredible show. I can't wait to see more of him in Vought Rising. This show continues to amaze as it's not afraid to try new things and is a show that is definitely for adults. It has no problems being offensive and making you feel squeamish. You don't even have to be a fan of superhero shows to enjoy this. It's violent, funny, thrilling, etc.. Everything you want in a good superhero show. I don't know what else I can say except I absolutely love this series.

Show less ↑Not bad, just ended underwhelming
Not going to give this show some low score, and say it is a disaster, nor that it is terrible, and other stuff that is not true. There are some "substance issues" and obvious lack of consistencies with "power scaling" which are the result of what is the problem: One can either upscale the show (for the final season especially) and end more "epic", or can get to the same end by doing a downscale.. For "whatever reason", The Boys took the latter path..

Show less ↑It's exactly the opposite of your usual superhero show!
I've had big expectations about this show, because I thought that is going to be exactly that kind of show, in which the good guys (the superheroes) fight the bad guys (the villains) and of course, they win. I couldn't have been more wrong, especially because "The Boys" it's not about a desperate attempt of superheroes to save the world from evil, instead this show takes a much more realistic approach, about what is going to happen if superheroes had really existed. I'm saying that I had big expectations in the beginning, because I thought that it would be the same usual show with superheroes and villain, that is most likely to find everywhere. In the first couple of episodes I've been a little bit disappointed, or rather shocked, because like I've already said, "The Boys" describes what the MCU never did. Of course, the movies and shows from Marvel are destined to other public's category, but this show is tough. It has all you could not expect from a TV series with superheroes. It has violence, gore, nudity, astonishing CGI effects and a very unpredictable and solid storyline. In the end it seems that this one delivered what I didn't expect it to and I am pleased with that. The show is definitely worth watching.

Can't say I recall seeing Anthony Star in any films (and I'm an Aussie) but his performance as Homelander is really something else - someone give him an award. Can't wait for next season, and more projects with Star.
Violence, depth and American values right in your face!!
I'm a huge Legion fan because of the way they did things - The Boys landed like a punch to the face, its dark, its funny (that dolphin scene!) and most of all its one of the most entertaining shows I've seen lately... every character is developed to perfection and if you don't end up hating/loving Antony Starr for his superb interpretation of Homelander then you missed the whole point! A definite must watch - that would definitely be our world with supes!! They dwell on topics such as sexual harrasment, drug abuse, collateral damage and co-dependence like no one else is doing on TV - congrats Amazon and cast!

With all these awful shows like supergirl and legends of tomorrow etc..The Boys is the perfect antidote to that insipid moralistic tripe that's spewed our TVs so thank you Amazon Prime for treating us like adults and I can't wait for the second season

Want to see what it would really be like with super heroes around? Check this out! No kids play here folks....not for kids. Best damn series on right now....about time!
Amazon pulled off a "Netflix" spectacularly !
Around the world we have a global obsession of superhero comic characters even though they are not real, the billion dollar industry about them. Would you even imagine the franchise we would have to endure if they came into real life! This franchise would become The One quite easily. Here comes this The Boys ! Easily might become the greatest first season of A Superhero TV show ever, competing with Marvels Daredevil ofcourse. But this scrip is so freaking impressive, the over the top violence and gore along with great dialogues and brilliant acting easily brings it to the top. i would be really surprised if the two KIWI lead protagonists, Kurl Urban and Anthony Starr wouldn't get nominated for best actors in a leading role, specially Starr. He was absolutely brilliant as the lead antagonist Homelander. That says something for a superhero movie, wouldn't you say ! Was waiting patiently for this show, and living up to that hype was not easy. Had to binge it at once, it's that addictive. Wow! Before even release, Amazon Prime ordered a second season even though the production cost might have been astronomical I would imagine. They were that confident, this was that good. Watch it, you'll enjoy !!

Having being all superheroed out with the never ending train of films this is so much welcome relief. It's not for kids and I love the choice language which is appropriate.
Unexpected
Excellent dystopian reimagining for Superhero nerds. Surprising, violent, always twisting. Binge-watched in 2 days! So glad for a second season, though will be so impatient! Thumbs up.
Definitly one of the best series this year
First it's just a very interesting take on the whole superhero genre. But there's also a lot more. Great actors, great storyline and very nice picture. I guess for me it's the best superhero series yet, followed by Titans and Umbrella Academy.
It's 4am
Started watching this brilliant spin on a superhero show after dinner. Now it's 4 am and I have just watched the whole thing. From the very first episode I was glued to this exciting, interesting and crazy ride.
Just... Wow. Dark, funny and gripping.
Just finished watching the four first episodes. The pilot has to be one of greatest pilots I've ever seen. It has everything and I was hooked immideately. And it keeps getting better. I didn't know I needed this. It's really bold and a fresh wind for TV.
Check it out. You will be surprised.
Great twist on the superhero genre. The story is well written. The acting is good. Definitely an entertaining series.
Fairly unique
Bad superheroes have been done before, but not like this. Very entertaining.
You think you know the Super Heroes are very much mistaken!
Forget the ethics, the quest for justice, the hearts of gold filled with good intentions: The superheroes of The Boys went far from what the public got used to seeing in the Marvel and DC movies. May the second season come.
